The No. 9 UniFirst Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE made its official 2020 NASCAR debut on March 8 at the Phoenix Raceway, with Elliott starting from the pole position and leading 93 laps en route to a top-10 finish. His first crowning achievement of the 2020 season came in July, when he piloted the No. 9 UniFirst Chevy to an exciting first-place finish and the $1 million grand prize at the popular NASCAR All-Star Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Elliott joined his father, Bill Elliott, as winners of the annual event.

“Just a special night. A special event. Any race is hard to win, but this is a special race to win as it locks you into the All-Star Race for life. Winning this race means a lot to me personally, as well. Just a big thanks to UniFirst for everything they do for me and the team. Really cool to get our first win together.” - Chase Elliott after his 2020 All-Star Race win

The UniFirst Chevy’s final appearance in the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series came on September 27 at the South Point 400 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Elliott and the No. 9 UniFirst team began the playoff race in the third spot, led the pack for 73 laps, and earned a Stage 2 victory.

That impressive playoff performance was a sign of things to come. Elliott cruised through much of the NASCAR playoffs, earning top-six finishes in five of his next six races. This included a crucial first-place finish at Martinsville on November 1, a win he needed in order to advance to the final championship-four race. Elliott put on a dominating performance, leading 236 laps and securing his place for the season finale.

Then, on November 8, Elliott made history by winning the 2020 Cup Series championship in Phoenix. The 24-year-old became the third-youngest driver in NASCAR history to earn the championship and, along with his father, joined Lee and Richard Petty and Ned and Dale Jarrett as the third father/son duo to earn NASCAR Cup titles.

“I just never would have thought that this year would have gone like it has. I mean, NASCAR Cup Series champion, are you kidding me? Unreal.'' - Chase Elliott after winning the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series championship

That historic 2020 run officially established Elliott as NASCAR’s premier driver, although his emergence didn’t come as a complete surprise. After all, Elliott had been on the professional racing scene since he was featured in Sports Illustrated at 13 years old, and it didn’t take long for him to exceed those lofty expectations. After joining Hendrick Motorsports in 2011, the young driver proceeded to make appearances in the stock car touring series, the NASCAR Truck Series, and the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Elliott made his official NASCAR Cup Series debut in 2015, and he earned the league’s Rookie of the Year award the following season.

Since that time, Elliott has been one of the sport’s most recognizable faces, and he’s backed up his popularity with consistent showings on the track:

  • 2017: Ranked 5th, 12 top-five finishes, 560 laps led
  • 2018: Ranked 6th, 3 wins, 11 top-five finishes, 325 laps led
  • 2019: Ranked 10th, 3 wins, 11 top-five finishes, 601 laps led
  • 2020: Ranked 1st, 5 wins, 15 top-five finishes, 1,247 laps led

Elliott also earned the coveted “Most Popular Driver” award in each of the past three years, replacing 15-time winner Dale Earnhardt Jr.
